I am thrilled by the news that my little yellow Car Design Asia won a 2014 ADAC Autobuch Award – 2nd in the category Design. I certainly would not blame myself for not winning: top of the list was the long awaited monography of famous Zagato designer Ercole Spada (less pages, less images, double price – so it must be better) Actually, I feel pampered by the attention given to my work by the largest German automobile club – a mighty institution indeed. Actually, my Car Design America received the same treatment in 2012. Though merely a third place back then, the award was very well compensated by a 1st place outright for The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Book, a majestic volume which I co-authored with master Jürgen Lewandowski – a colleague writer and incidentally member of the award jury. I feel somewhat sorry for Car Design Europe, first of my Car Design Trilogy, which missed such recognition, but then: the ADAC Autobuch Award did not exist when the book came out in 2011... Finally, I should mention that Making Aston Martin, which I produced in collaboration with Dr. Ulrich Bez, got a 2nd place in 2013 for the category Biographies. Really not too bad considering that the 1st place went to Walter de Silva’s complete compendium – Walter is not only a great car designer, but again a member of the award jury. All this said, with new books coming out in 2015, I look forward to another thrilling competition.
